Italian Wines – Ca’Romè – Barbaresco
Cà Romè is a small winemaker located at the top of the Rabajà hill - Barbaresco's historical cru - the house overlooks an endless vista of gently sloping Langhe country. It’s quite young because it started in 1980 but has always been able to produce great red wines.
The vineyards' totalsurface is about 12 acres (5 hectares), partly located at Barbaresco, partly at Serralunga d'Alba, in Barolo territory. This small plot of land allows to produce about 30.000 bottles yearly. The Ca' Rome' range comprises three wines from the Serralunga cru: the Barolo "Rapet" Gold Label, the Barolo "Ceretta", and the La Gamberaja Barbera d'Alba. The vineyards' hillside terrain is marly, calcareous - clayey and compact, bluish-white in color, impermeable to water; conducive to full-bodied, big wines, with an extremely long cellar life. The wines from Barbaresco are Barbaresco, Barbaresco "Maria di Brun", and Barbaresco "Rio Sordo". Soil is compact, clayey-calcareous, white in color; wines with impressive structure, body and cellar life - and at the same time - exquisitely feminine in style, exhibiting elengance and balance.
Cà Romè produces one of my favourite "Nebbiolo Wine" I ever tasted, this is called Calimpia that is a 100 % Nebbiolo from a vineyard located on the Barbaresco hill that contains young vines. The name Calimpia stands for Ca’Rome’ and Olimpia, Romano’s homage to his wife.
In spite of the winery’s steady increase in size and importance, when you speak to Mr Marengo and his family, most notably son Giuseppe, an oenology graduate, and daughter Paola, in charge of p.r. and marketing, you will find that first impression of Ca’ Rome’, with its quiet, country-home air, made for leisure and family life had some truth in it, after all. You feel Romano grew his children and his wines with the same sterling discipline, the same sense of excellence and impeccable standards. The family is really hospitable & loves their wines.
