Italian Wines – Bozen Winery – Lagrein Taber
Lagrein is a typical South Tyrolean variety, which thrives on the plains of the Bolzano valley, and its surroundings, benefitting from the strong temperature differences between day and night. Only old vines are able to yield a wine of extraordinary quality. With concentrated, yet smooth tannin, luscious fruit and a powerful body. This is one of my favourite variety & I like so much to taste different lagrein around South Tyrol & I think that this is one of my top 3!

This wine is picked from more than 80 year-old vines that grow on sandy porphyry soils of Bolzano. The Winery is called “Cantina Bolzano” or Bozen Kellerei, located in Bozen, since 2001. It’s quite young but this Winery is a result of a joint venture between Gries Winery (born in 1908) & St.Magdalena winery (born in 1930)..this is the reason why this winery has a strong wine production history.
Furthermore the winery is located inside the old are of Bozen city & this is quite particular & interesting because in the same square you’ll find 3 different winery. I think that if you’re interested about food & wine, Bozen is a town that has to be visited & Bozen Winery too, not only for its great “Taber”.
Fermentation is made in wood barrel then, for the next 1 year, is finished in French barrique. These process gives to Taber an Intense garnet red colour; black cherries, floral notes of roses and violets, luxurious hints of coca and fondant chocolate & mixed barriers aroma. In my opinion the mixed berries aroma is the strongest one but not giving to this wine an extremely sweet taste.
Please, taste this great wine also awarded by Gambero Rosso with 3 glasses (Taber 2013) Web Site Here
